Terms

Last updated: 2026-05-02

What you keep

You retain copyright in your story, recordings, and photos. Submitting to Hamanteh grants us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to display and preserve your contribution under the consents you ticked at submission. Nothing exclusive, nothing transferred.

What we promise

  • We never publish anything without explicit consent.
  • We never sell submitter data.
  • We honour takedown requests promptly (procedure below).
  • We keep secure backups so your story isn't lost to a server failure.

Takedown procedure

If you want your family's entry removed:

  1. Email [email protected] with the family name and confirmation that you have authority to request removal (e.g., a senior member of the family).
  2. Within 7 days, we acknowledge and send you a complete data export — every audio file, transcript, photo, and submission record we hold for that family.
  3. Once you confirm receipt, we remove the entry from the public site within 24 hours.
  4. The entry stays soft-deleted for 30 days (recoverable in case of mistake), then purged from production permanently.
  5. Backups containing the data are retained for 12 months by policy; we do not selectively re-derive backups, but the data is unreachable through any user-facing surface.

What we ask of you

  • Only submit material you have the right to share — your own family's stories, or stories where the people involved have consented.
  • Don't submit material that defames, identifies minors without consent, or breaks Gambian law.
  • If a story involves living people, get their permission before submitting their voice or full name.

Liability

Hamanteh is provided "as is". We work hard to preserve and present community history with care, but we make no guarantee that the platform will be available 24/7 or that every detail is historically perfect. Stories are oral histories — they are how the family remembers, not necessarily how an outside historian would record events.

Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be announced on the homepage at least 30 days before they take effect.
