Chapter 01
1968 designation; 2021 government list
Abuko and the reserve are related, but not interchangeable
The environment ministry lists Abuko Nature Reserve as established in 1968, with an area of 134 hectares and a Kanifing/Brikama administrative notation. The listing establishes a protected area, not a history of Abuko households or a claim that all local ecological knowledge is public.
The settlement directory’s place name and the reserve’s legal listing answer different questions. Future work should invite residents, reserve staff and local educators to distinguish everyday paths, remembered landscape change and shareable conservation knowledge.

A census settlement is not an entire community story
GBoS's settlement directory lists named places within regions and districts. It explicitly notes that names may change and that mappers asked residents about original settlement names, a reminder that naming is a social record as well as a statistical code.
Bakau New Town and Bakau Wasulun, Sere Kunda, Tanjeh, Gunjur, Farafenni and Soma appear as distinct records or clusters of records. Their 2013 counts cannot be transferred to 2024, and administrative data alone cannot explain a place's family, language or cultural history.

A name you remember. A photograph in a drawer. A voice you want the next generation to hear. You do not need a complete history to add something meaningful.
