Chapter 01

Named in the 2013 census; earlier history not yet verified here

Berending and Essau in Lower Niumi

The Gambia Bureau of Statistics' 2013 settlement directory lists both Berending and Essau within the Lower Niumi district block of North Bank Region, in the same section of the directory that records Barra. Their placement in the same district as Barra situates both villages within the historic kingdom of Niumi at the mouth of the River Gambia, the setting for the Barra War recorded elsewhere in this archive.

This archive has not yet verified a primary or peer-reviewed account of Berending's or Essau's individual founding, administrative role or population, and deliberately does not repeat unsourced claims about either village's status within the former kingdom. Local oral history, a district administrative record or an accessible academic study of Lower Niumi would be needed before either village can carry a fuller profile.
