Chapter 01

2019-2026 project listing

Brikama Ba in two Central River networks

The agriculture ministry identifies Brikama Ba in Lower Fulladu as a weekly livestock-market location. Its sector account describes rural loumos as links between producers, dealers and larger terminal markets. The Brikama Ba listing is evidence of that market node at the time, not a history of its founding or proof of every trading route.

The government projects register names Brikama Ba on a proposed Sutukoba-Chamoi Kunda-Brikama Ba-Wellingara road section. The register also says this replaced an earlier planned Gambisara route. That is evidence of changing infrastructure plans, not completion or an observed benefit. This Central River town must not be confused with West Coast Brikama.

Chapter 02

2023, with practice continuing informally today

New arenas for an old wrestling tradition

The Gambia Wrestling Association and the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry completed a European Union-funded, three-year culture-support project. On 24 November 2023 the project handed over newly built wrestling arenas at a ceremony held in Farafenni, distributing venues to Farafenni itself, to Brikama Ba in the Central River Region, and to a third West Coast location. An EU official's remarks framed traditional sport as part of the country's own identity and economic development, not only entertainment, and one speaker called wrestling one of the Gambia's oldest sports.

A photographed image of wrestlers grappling on a Gambian beach, outside any formal arena, is a reminder that the sport's everyday practice was, and by that 2013 date still was, never confined to purpose-built venues alone.
