Brufut
A coastal community with a restricted NCAC oral-history record that needs consented local follow-up.

Gathering what this circle has shared so far.
Chapter 01
Interview dated 1981; catalogue record published 2022
Brufut’s restricted oral-history record
The National Digital Archive catalogue lists a Brufut interview with topics including foundation, genealogy, imams, a Sabiji dispute and migration. The audio and record are restricted, so the catalogue is evidence of a held record, not evidence for any of those historical claims.
The record directs access requests to NCAC and says the owner decides access. A publication-ready Brufut history needs permission, a read transcript or recording, and community review rather than extraction from metadata.
A familiar name, a remembered voice. What would you add to the story of Brufut?
Add your memoryChapter 02
1993 designation; 2021 government list
Tanji River and Bijol: a coastal habitat mosaic
The environment ministry lists Tanji Bird Reserve as established in 1993 and describes marine, estuarine, freshwater, coastal-scrub and woodland habitats around the Tanji River and Bijol Islands. These are a protected-area description, not evidence that one ecological story belongs to all neighbouring communities.
The ministry page notes the area is locally called Karinti. This is a useful searchable name link, but spelling, local language and any associated oral knowledge should be confirmed by people who choose to contribute it.
Chapter 03
1995 study using 1983 census context
Three coastal communities in a fisheries study
FAO identifies Brufut, Tanji and Gunjur as Atlantic-coast study communities south of Banjul. Its demographic comparison uses old census context, so this archive retains the geographical link but does not carry its population figures forward as current community facts.

What does Brufut
mean to you?
A name you remember. A photograph in a drawer. A voice you want the next generation to hear. You do not need a complete history to add something meaningful.
From nearby or far away, in the language that feels like home. New contributions are reviewed with care before they appear.
