Soldier Town: From Garrison Ground to African Civic Life

Soldier Town's name records Bathurst's military origins, but its history quickly exceeds the garrison. Reclaimed land, Liberated African settlement, churches, households, renters, skilled work, petitioning, and civic association all belong in the chapter.

Drainage, coerced labour, and settlement

Manneh identifies the making of dry land for Soldier Town as Bathurst's first colonial drainage project. The dike and sluice work was carried out before 1820 by Liberated Africans known in the records as the King's Boys. Their legal freedom did not prevent colonial authorities from extracting hard public labour. The creation of the quarter therefore joins environmental engineering to the unresolved meanings of freedom after abolition.

Barracks and African troops

Soldier Town contained military facilities and barracks. Liberated African units were stationed there from the 1820s, while high mortality among British-born soldiers helped make the area increasingly African. The military name should not reduce residents to soldiers alone, but it remains an important clue to the colonial allocation of land, work, and security.

Homes across class lines

Archaeological and property evidence from the Williams family site shows a socially mixed neighbourhood. Wealthier Liberated African families owned property and sometimes rented rooms or secondary structures to lower-paid workers employed by commercial firms and the Public Works Department. Traditional masonry houses and kirinting structures could stand within the same property landscape, complicating any simple label of elite or poor.

Association, worship, and political voice

Friendly societies based in Soldier Town helped turn social association into collective political action. In 1849, members connected with the Committee of the Black Inhabitants organized a petition signed by 139 Black residents criticizing the governor. Bethel Church also served worshippers in Soldier Town. These histories make the quarter a place of civic organization as well as military administration.
