Bathurst's planned quarters and port

In the early town, major streets led toward port warehouses on Wellington Street. The planned separation of government, mercantile and residential spaces appears in archaeological and archival study, yet each quarter developed through the people who worked and settled there. [gijanto-2020]

Names including Soldier Town and Portuguese Town preserve parts of that social geography. Their histories should not be flattened into a single ethnicity: Liberated Africans, Luso-African traders, colonial troops and other residents inhabited overlapping worlds. [gijanto-2020]
