Craft, livelihood and change at Brikama market

The town's craft market is a site of making and trade, and a recent study records tensions around its relocation.

Hughes and Perfect describe Brikama as a West Coast administrative and commercial centre in their 2008 dictionary. The 2013 settlement directory then records many named Brikama quarters separately, including Kabafita, Missira, Newtown and Santo Su. The town should not be collapsed into a single local-government population figure. [hughes-perfect-dictionary] [gbos-settlements]

A 2026 Gambian and Nigerian research team studied the Brikama Craft Market through interviews with market stakeholders. Its abstract reports artisans' concerns that relocation to a purpose-built complex could displace long-standing makers and reshape how crafts are sold, alongside possible improvements to infrastructure. Those are reported perspectives on a changing market, not a settled verdict on every vendor's experience. [ambali-brikama-2026]
