What the census cannot tell us about diaspora

The 2013 migration analysis says its international data principally describe people moving into The Gambia. It did not directly collect the number or characteristics of Gambians who emigrated abroad. ^{[gbos-migration]}

That gap matters for a living archive. A figure for internal migration, a person's surname, or a visitor's association with a memorial site cannot fill in an overseas family route; documents and voluntarily shared family accounts have to be evaluated on their own terms. ^{[gbos-migration] [unesco-kinteh]}
