Census categories do not tell us which language someone speaks

National ethnic tables and language policy answer different questions.

WhatsAppFacebook

The preliminary 2024 census displays national ethnic categories such as Mandinka, Fula, Wollof, Sarahule and Jola. The education policy separately names languages for teaching. The categories overlap in names but are not the same measurement. [gbos-2024] [gambia-education-policy]

Neither source reports the languages spoken by any named individual in the archive. Transcription, translation and search labels therefore need to be based on the contribution itself and consented contextual information, not a surname or a census percentage. [gbos-2024] [gambia-education-policy]
