Portuguese Town's Atlantic connections

Movement through Sierra Leone and Atlantic trading networks left traces in Bathurst's quarter.

WhatsAppFacebook

Gijanto describes Portuguese Town as a major settlement area for Liberated Africans arriving through Sierra Leone, including people with wider Atlantic journeys. Luso-African merchants from Gorée also figured in this commercial quarter. [gijanto-2020]

The quarter developed beside Wellington Street's river-facing warehouses and became one of early Bathurst's wealthier areas. Its inhabitants were part of a city with Muslim, Wesleyan and other Christian communities, where work in commerce, military service and government intersected with Atlantic migration. [gijanto-2020]
