Guide and practice

The machine made the first guess. You make the transcript trustworthy.

This page explains how community transcription works and offers a short, synthetic practice exercise. No archive recording or real family information appears anywhere on this page.

Code of care

You may hear private family information. Work only inside Hamanteh. Do not download, copy, discuss, or share a recording outside the assigned task.

Why this archive exists

Communities record and send in their own Half Die stories. Hamanteh keeps them safe in private custody and returns cleared stories to families and the community. Every public story is reviewed and family-approved before release.

Consent and confidentiality

A family’s permission to store a recording is separate from permission to publish it, and separate again from permission to use transcript text for language-tool research. You never decide what gets published; the family and a reviewer do.

Mixed-language text

Recordings often mix Wolof, Mandinka, Fula, Jola, Sarahule, Aku, and English in the same sentence. Type what is actually said, in the language it is said, rather than translating.

Unclear markers

When a word or phrase cannot be confirmed; too quiet, overlapping speech, an unfamiliar name; mark it as unclear instead of guessing. A reviewer or a second listener resolves it.

Speakers

Recordings are labelled by speaker turn where more than one person is talking, so a transcript reads as a conversation, not a single block of text.

Reviewer feedback and qualification

A short practice task like the one below shows the pattern real work follows. Qualification moves from not started, to in progress, to qualified once a submitted attempt is confirmed; the same states a reviewer sees on real task queues.

Practice exercise

A short, made-up example; not a real recording; that shows the correction pattern real work follows.

This is a practice exercise, not a real recording — no archive audio is used. Read the rough machine draft below, then type the corrected line the way a careful transcriber would confirm it: fix the obvious guess and mark anything you cannot confirm with [unclear].

Rough machine draft; Wolof, unconfirmedSama euh... jigéen bi dafa jënd meew ak [unclear] ci marché bi.

This is a practice exercise; nothing here is saved to an application.
